Biker speak, or "rider-ese"
« on: August 02, 2006, 08:40:58 AM »
I had this idea of posting a thread where everyone can post a word that they use when talking "biker talk".  Hope that makes sense.  Here's a for example:  Cage = car/truck/suv/van

Are there other words/phrases people use to describe something that's biker/biking (sport bike, cruiser, or touring) specific?

Can the admins make this a sticky?

We have got to get the Brits in on this one; they've got some great ones like "minger", which absolutely slays me every time I read it. "Whoa, that was quite the minger you pulled back there, mate."

Actually, I'm having a hard time even thinking of any to get you started out...maybe it's just already engrained into my head that I don't even think if the word or phrase is someting a n00b might not understand.

If we get anyting here, we should probably move it into the modified forum Chris set up last week so it's all in one place.

Uhhh....let's see....know what a highside is? Tankslapper?

I know a female bike group called "The tankslappers", very funny... although thinking about it you may have to be a Brit to get the pun?

I often buy the latest copy of the Viz when travelling by train to London, it never fails to make me laugh out loud when reading it
Rogers Profanisaurus is so amusing because it is true.

Learners wear 'Looney Plates'.
Car drivers are 'Cage Dwellers' (or ignorant myopic bastards depending on how well the ride in went).
Tyres are 'Rubber'.
Exhaust silencers are 'Cans'.
Wheelies are indeed 'Mingers'
And BMW drivers are 'Arrogant Tossers who wouldn't know what an indicator light was if it came up and twatted them across the left hand side of the head, then the right hand side of the head, then the left hand etc'.

Admit it mtn cat, you're fascinated with terminology, aren't you?

Yup, guess I am.  For some reason, I just don't like that glazed-over look I give to those who've been riding for eons it seems as compared to me when we get together for fun and riding.

I read the posts that are here so far.  What a great way to start the day with a good ole belly chuckle.

Ok, here's another...and, yes I know you guys already use this, but it's not part of everyday conversation in say the school where I work.

squid = someone who rides, but doesn't seem to care about his/her skin or head too much, because they don't wear gear.

I don't understand what "rider-specific" means...

It would probably be simpler for you to tell us what you want defined, rather than the board simply trying to recall every single bit of motorcycling-related phrases any of us have ever used. Give us some examples of the terms that induce the dreaded glaze over effect, and we'll see if we can help.

It's also quite possible that until you actually experience whatever is being described, it won't mean much to you anyway. Then it'll be like "Ohhhh, that's what they were talking about!"

Ummm...well, I know I didn't mean to get a response like 'The Ston' included with his links.  I'm hoping that not everyone else thinks that either.

Other than that...I thought that by placing a few examples it would be clear.  Like "cage/cagers", "squid".  When people who ride use these words, they mean something completely different than what people who don't ride would think.  It's pretty simple and can be silly/fun if you think about it.  That's all I was hopin' for.  Some of the other posts are quite funny. :D

Ah. Silly and fun. I don't do silly and fun.

Honestly, beyond the ones already listed, there aren't all that many. That I know of anyway. (Or maybe there are and I just don't realize it....)

If anyone thinks of more, please post in this thread.
