brake calipers, again
« on: May 25, 2011, 12:33:41 AM »
ok guys, i know the easiest way to get better brakes is to change the forks, but i dont want that, so, for those who want better calipers and have struggled to find something that fits, try this link www.svracingparts.com, they do a bracket that should allow cbr 600rr or the older fireblade nissin calipers to fit, i have just ordered a set of these brackets and also bought cbr 954 calipers, hopefully get them fitted in the next few weeks and will let you know how i get on

Have just aquired a zx10 2004 master cylinder. Should arrive tomorrow. Can't wait to get these mods on and see if it works. Hmmm. Maybe need to find a quiet straight road to try it out before I hit the twistys

Got the fireblade master fitted. Total nightmare to rebleed the brakes. Took me hours today. Gonna Finnish it off tomorrow and go try it out

Ok. Cbr1000 master doesn't work. Bollox. Too much lever travel. Stops the bike but refitted the original. Must be due to the cylinder volumes. Oh well. Resell on eBay.

I wouldn't mind upping the brakes without replacing the whole front end.

Do you think the SVRacing brackets will work with the 07-onwards Z750, with the USD forks? And how much of the donor bike's brake system do you need to use to do the conversion?

Ok. The sv brackets dont work. Totally gutted. Could use them as a starting point for a template to get ones made up. Gutted. Time to resell stuff on eBay.

Bummer -- I was hoping for a positive report.  Maybe do a search on ER-6N (Ninja 650) brake upgrades, since the forks appear to be very similar to the Z750?  Otherwise it's a matter of finding alternate calipers with the same mounting (or making up adapters as you suggested).

The only bikes I can find with our calipers are the zed and the sv. But the sv gas a smaller disc and a different offset. The caliper mount is 55mm centre to centre. Nothing else uses that I believe. Only option is custom brackets or fork swap

Funny that you happened to mention that. I wanted to use a different caliper on my M50 and found out I couldn't do that easily because of the 55mm center to center mounting distance. So I ended up just upgrading the brake line to stainless steel and the pads to HH.

you're far better off just changing to a radial master cyl ( http://www.lemickracing.com/products/details/29/29/brakes/master-cylinders/nissin/nissin-radial-brake-master-cylinder ) with steel braided lines ( http://www.helbrakelines.com/ talk to jim and tell him curtis sent you.) easy peasy and you don't have to mess with different calipers. I have gsxr1k forks, wheel, calipers, rotor, HEL custom lines and the same MC linked there and it's a single finger system.

I just changed my pads to galpher (SP?) HH pads.  Big difference.  I have not ever really had any complaints about the stock brakes untill recently though.  I run a street/track tire in the front and have always been limited to front lockup or going over the bars.

the odd thing is that HH is just a heat/friction rating.  the Tokico pads (stock) that I took off were labeled HH, but the Galphers are much more grippy.  they DO create more heat and have changed the rotors to a darker color.

What about changing to a softer metal rotor like a galpher?  Other than the fact that for the costs involved you mite as well change to a 636 front setup alltogether.

I have a '00 zx9r master cylinder waiting to be mounted, but i do not know when i will gat around to it.  It could be a long while.  It is labeled at 5/8" DIA so it should be better than stock, but not to grabby like the 19mms would be on  a dual piston caliper setup.  Either way it is meant for a system with 4 pot calipers and should move more than enough fluid.

I also plan to change to SS lines, but this will have to wait until I am deeper in my cafe racer/60's GP racer transformation.
