no power past 80mph
« on: November 08, 2011, 07:03:57 AM »
soo....i had an over heat issue and it got fixed. didnt ride it much when it started. at the same time i got new spark plugs put in..anyways i did commuting for a week and then decided i wanted to go fast, and found it stuck at 80. i can go through all the gears fine i still have most of the power 0-70 but past that it like..isnt going any faster i dont know why. i have a friend looking at it but what do you guys think? its an 06 with 10.5k miles clean air filter and always got oil changed on time by myself.

i was wondering if the top or bottom was blown from the over heat but he says the bike either wouldnt start or we would hear it, and def not if it still has bottom end power..im lost on what the issue is :/ could the gapping on the plugs throw it off THAT much? youd think it would affect the whole power band not just 80mph.

So, if you hold first gear till redline, you have full/normal power throughout?

I think he just wants to see if the engine can reach all rpm's with full power, and you are just having the issue with the speed.  I would try that, just wind her up and see if it stalls/hesitates at the same rpm's in first gear as it does whatever gear you are having the issue in.

Yes. If I remember correctly, the bike runs about 6k or 7k RPMs at 80mph in 6th gear. If you are shifting below this rpm range until you hit 6th, and then you notice the power loss because there is no 7th gear to shift to, then it is an engine rpm related issue and not a bike speed issue. You can check this by running through out the rpm range in first gear, but if you are not comfortable doing this, do not do it. Check the fuel line for kinks, check the fuel filter in the tank, check your throttle body secondaries. Also check the clutch adjustment and even the clutch. The overheating could have cause clutch issues. Make sure nothing made a nest in the filter box.

checked the fuel lines no kinks. and i decided to go ahead and do that, at around 7-8 rpm the engine bogs down and doesnt go much further. I tried it in Neutral and 1st, 2nd, and all the way till 6th gear on a road here. so what could it be??

Asking, because I'm not sure, but the brand, SeaFoam, might help unclog the injectors.  Sea Foam Sales Co. 12987 Pioneer Trail, Eden Prairie MN 55347  (no, I don't work for them)
Check YouTube for videos of the results.  I have heard of very good results and have used it myself to help clean out engine internals...
Good luck  :)

sorry for late reply, im offshore and the internet has been down , clogged injectors is just a guess, but you should be able to get injector cleaner fairly cheap

i know its been a while ive been riding the bike with the issue. prepare for the answer to this dilemma. It confused the shit out of my mechanic because he said the engine was running too lean and he didnt know why...turns out the whole time we werent making sure the FUEL LINE wasnt kinked between the frame and tank. Which is what was happening.

Haha. Shit. Think that's fairly common too.

My 06 was experiencing similar issues. Mine turned out to be out-of-spec valves. I would highly recommend taking a peek at least.
